I was a lecturer by profession, and I love teaching people, and I presented some of the earliest seminars for the Kennel Club and for other breed clubs. I have really enjoyed sharing my experience and knowledge with people who would like to judge.
I started showing dogs when I was 14 years old and had my first dog, a Cocker Spaniel named Sparky. I had high hopes for him, but they never materialised as he grew far too tall and he had little success in the show ring but with him I learned how to handle a dog in the showring. Since those days I have always been involved in the world of dogs shows.
I started writing books and published two books on Cockers. When I finally wrote a book on judging all the gundog breeds and took it to a publisher, it was rejected because they felt it would not sell. After all, it was not about just one breed. The book proved them wrong and has been one of the biggest sellers in the last 10 years, and has just gone into a third printing.
